CASE No 2: July 23th 2002

Woman aged 68 with left segmental mastectomy for a Grade II, infiltrating, ductal carcinoma with metastatic disease to 1 of the 19 left axillary lymph nodes.The radiation administered consisted of 45 Gy at the supraclavicular and parasternal area plus 10 Gy at the tumor bed. After 52 months the patient noticed a slightly raised red-purple skin lesion on the lower inner quadrant of the left breast. A simple mastectomy was performed.

Gross Findings

Under the skin lesion a spongy hemorrhagic tumor of 4cm was observed. The images are from this lesion.

Diagnosis
Breast angiosarcoma as a complication of conservative treatment (lumpectomy and radiation) for invasive cancer.
